PASTORAL FROM HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP OF PARIS AGAINST THOSE WOMEN WHO CAUSE THE DEATH OF THEIR CHILDREN*

HARDOUIN OF PEREFIXE, by the grace of God & of the Holy Apostolic See, Archbishop of Paris, to the Archpriests of St Mary Magdalene & St Severinus, Hail to thee in the name of our Lord. It is the ordinary result of a crime to hide oneself & to defend oneself by other crimes. Through experience we see this in those unhappy women, who lower themselves to the vice of immodesty, to disorder & to debauchery, who most frequently believe they cannot cover up the shame of their dissoluteness other than by parricide & who, in order to preserve that honour in men's eyes which they have lost in God's, feel it necessary to destroy innocent creatures, whom God has made in His image and likeness, to lose Souls which He redeemed with His Blood & to be the murderers of their own Children, almost before being their Mothers. And because the severity of divine and human Laws, which demanded the most serious chastisement in order to punish this sin, has not yet been able to completely suppress the frenzy produced now and again by these monsters of cruelty, we have good reason to fear that either the people are ignorant of the enormity of this crime & of the severity of said Laws, or that the guilty parties too often find indulgence in the Tribunals of Penitence, or that they too readily cherish a false hope of not being found guilty. This is why we believed it was important to repeat the ancient Edicts and Statutes of this Diocese, in order that the magnitude of the punishments make it clear with what abhorrence this crime must be viewed & that even should one be able to conceal it from man's knowledge, he would not be able to avoid the anathema of the Church, nor the anger of God who will punish such a sin terribly for Eternity, if it is not erased by a great & sincere penance. BECAUSE OF THIS, We forbid all Cures, Curates & other Priests, both Secular and Regular, no matter what power they claim to have, if they do not have Our permission to absolve reserved cases, to give absolution to any women or young women who by potions, or by other illicit means, caused the death or tried to cause the death of their offspring, animated or not, even when death did not take place, which We equally want to be observed with regard to all persons who consciously gave or prescribed said potions & means. And if there are any Mothers unnatural enough to spill the blood of their already born Children, to suffocate them, or to cause their death by any other manner, We command that they incur the penalty of excommunication & we
